It was jointly introduced by blockchain projects such as BitGo, Kyber Network, and Ren (previously known as Republic Protocol). This token, issued on the Ethereum network, maintains a 1:1 peg with Bitcoin. Every WBTC issued is backed by Bitcoin, with each Bitcoin held by custodians corresponding to the total number of issued WBTC, verifiable on-chain. Custodians can only mint WBTC upon merchant approval, and when holders redeem WBTC for Bitcoin, the WBTC is destroyed.
