Founded in 2013, Luno is a Bitcoin wallet and exchange platform dedicated to bringing digital currencies closer to the real world. Luno CEO Marcus Swanepoel believes that distributed digital currencies like Bitcoin will fundamentally change how we think about and use money: more convenient and secure transactions, greater privacy and financial freedom, a better user experience, and ultimately, a more equitable financial system for everyone.
The name "Luno" is a nod to the moon, which represents our shared optimism for this emerging industry. As many Bitcoin enthusiasts know, the phrase "To the moon!" is a popular expression in the Bitcoin community, often referring to the potential for Bitcoins price to rise dramatically and generate significant wealth. However, Marcus sees the phrase as reflecting our excitement for the new technology and its potential: "The more we think about it, the more we realize that the metaphor is far greater than just price."
Furthermore, "Luno" is also the Esperanto word for "moon." Esperanto, first introduced in 1887, was designed as a universal language to connect people across the globe. Marcus hopes the name reflects their vision: "Bitcoin is a global asset equivalent that connects people better through money, one of humanitys oldest and most important forms of communication."
The Luno team comes from diverse backgrounds in engineering, finance, and industry, all united by a passion to revolutionize the way people use money. Many of our team members live in or have worked in multiple countries, speak multiple languages, and have successful track records working for global leaders like Google, Amazon, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, and Ernst & Young.
Lunos vision is to empower billions of people by bringing Bitcoin to everyone.
