Since the inception of the carbon offset market following the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement, fraud has been a significant issue. Bad actors are notorious for selling fake or expired carbon credits, and credit recycling scams can result in double-spending on unretired carbon credits (see one of the biggest cases here, a massive carbon credit fraud that even ensnared Deutsche Bank: the distributed ledger technology of blockchain is a perfect use case for carbon credits because it is immutable, non-revocable, and cannot be reused. Digital assets can also be burned, and transaction hashes provide proof that the relevant credits have been retired forever. We initially launched with the eponymous XELS token as a ‘platform token’ to access a future suite of stable tokens pegged 1:1 to various industry-standard voluntary carbon offset credits – think of it as the USDT of carbon credits.
